Chinese Artist Network (CAN) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization incorporated in state of California, USA. CAN brings together emerging artist with Chinese background, primarily in contemporary photography. CAN was initially founded on Internet by using modern technologies to promote and encourage the collaboration among artists. CAN strive to expose mainstream audience to these emerging artists as well as to attract critics, collectors, and mass media.

Background

Being a major immigrant force in the US, the Chinese community is best known for its economic and academic achievements. Rarely does a Chinese photographer in the US capture the attention or anxiety of a metropolitan community. Thanks to Internet and modern technology, images are now easily shared and displayed through digitalization and World Wide Web. As China is open up in the recent decades, CAN’s photographers have been heralded in the Mainland China with its fresh though powerful images to promote cross-cultural stewardship. Yet, it remains an isolated experiment and success. While their works are appreciated in Asia and elsewhere, no resource to facilitate this group of individuals exists in America, or in the western “art world”.

An increasing number of pre-eminent organizations sponsor CAN and its activities. Their financial support has been instrumental in the growth and evolution of CAN. It has also helped CAN maintain excellence in its programs. In addition, these institutions provide valuable insights through participation as advocates and advisors.
